Advanced Portuguese 1

This is an advanced course designed for students who have a strong background of Brazilian Portu- guese beyond the intermediate level, or have had at least the equivalent of 100 hours of previous instruction, or have completed the Intermediate Portuguese course. This class emphasizes oral and written communication skills, and upon completing this class the student will be at an advanced conversational level. This class will cover: grammar (pronouns; relative, coordinate, and subordinate conjunctions); verb conjugation (introduction to the subjunctive form, including the present and im- perfect forms); vocabulary (phrasal verbs, idioms, idiomatic expressions), cultural aspects (use of writ- ten Portuguese in literature, newspapers and articles covering different aspects of Brazilian culture). Moreover, conversational structures will be used in the class. THE INSTRUCTOR WILL BE SPEAKING PORTUGUESE THE ENTIRE TIME.

This class runs for 12 weeks, and meets once a week for 2 hours at a time, for a total of 24 hours of instruction. The instructor for this class is a native Brazilian Portuguese speaker, who has taught Por- tuguese in various capacities for several years. Upon completion of this course the student is ready to take Advanced Portuguese II.
